If you haven’t heard of Xos Inc., it’s quite alright. All you need to know for now about this company is that it is one of the world’s leading names when it comes to designing and manufacturing purpose-built commercial electric vehicles, which are not as easily-spotted as personal EVs right now as we all know. Since much of what we buy is transported by commercial vehicles that ply our roads, electrifying these vehicles has become increasingly important in an ever-growing commercialized world. This is where Allison Transmission and Xos Inc. come into play, at least in this particular instance. The latter not only makes commercial EVs, it also pioneers powertrains, charging infrastructure, and fleet management software for said EVs.

As for Allison Transmission, it’s undeniably and currently the world’s largest OEM of commercial-duty, fully-automatic transmissions, and a leading manufacturer of electric-hybrid and fully-electric propulsion systems. All of this basically means that these two companies (Xos Inc. and Allison Transmission) are likely a match made in heaven. Now, these two pioneering companies have come together to produce heavy-duty Class 7 and 8 commercial electric vehicles. The integration, validation and testing of the first set of eGen Power e-Axle hardware is performed by Xos Inc., whilst the delivery of the system in the heavy-duty vehicle platforms has been done by Allison Transmission. Xos Inc., will deliver more eGen Power 100S and 100D units to Allison throughout 2022.

Commenting on the deal was Giordano Sordoni, Chief Operating Officer, Xos, who said, “We founded Xos in 2016 to build electric vehicles that solved the challenges many fleet owners were facing due to rising costs of maintenance and diesel along with increasing emissions regulations, and today we’re proud to have hundreds of vehicles on the road with nationwide fleets. We’re honored to partner with Allison, a company that has a long history of innovation in the industry, on our common vision to improve the way the world works through advancing commercial vehicle technology. We believe that Allison’s differentiated e-Axle portfolio combined with its connectivity to fleet customers, established service channel, and reputation for delivering industry-leading reliability will allow Xos to accelerate our growth while enhancing the value we deliver to our customers.”

Meanwhile, Alexander Schey, Allison’s Managing Director, Electrification Commercialization and Strategy, had this to say, “We’re extremely proud to partner with Xos in the development of the next generation of commercial vehicles designed to improve the way fleets operate. “We are inspired by Xos’ innovative and ambitious yet pragmatic approach to the EV market, and we look forward to leveraging Allison’s extensive testing and validation capabilities and investments as part of our partnership to bring Xos heavy duty vehicles to market.”

Allison Transmission was established in 1915 in the US, and it has been one of the leading names when it comes to transmissions and propulsion systems. The nameplate is also welp-known for its electrified propulsion systems. On the other hand, Xos is one of the most-renowned names in the industry when it comes to the making of Class 5 and Class 8 battery-electric vehicles in the world. Just so you know, Class 5 EVs are of the pickup truck category, whilst Class 8 EVs are full-size trailer trucks. Also, Xos is also known for its knowledge in vehicles and fleet management software systems. Systems that have been particularly-designed with medium and heavy-duty commercial vehicles in mind – especially those that cover 200 miles (321 km) or less per day. Overall, the partnership between Allison Transmission and Xos. Inc should result in some of the best EVs in the commercial space.
