Meet the six finalists of Lexus Design Awards 2022

Every year Lexus holds the annual Design Awards in which it invites innovative ideas from all over the world. The six finalists for the tenth edition of the Lexus Design Awards 2022 have been revealed and each innovation echoes the Japanese carmaker’s three core principles―Anticipate, Innovate, and Captivate. 

The six finalists were selected by the jury  among 1,726 entries submitted by creators in 57 countries and are as follows:

1. Coming from Malaysia is Wondaleaf with the Hammock Wheelchair. The innovation is a combination of wheelchair, forklift, and hammock which in turn reduce the manual lifting of patients by caregivers.
2. Charlotte Böhning & Mary Lempres (Dual USA - Germany and Dual USA - Norway) have come up with Chitpfam which is a biodegradable packaging solution derived from exoskeletons of mealworms that have digested polystyrene foam waste
3. Nigerian Team Dunamis’ sustainable cooking, charging, and lighting product Ina Vibe has made it to the final thanks to its simple yet groundbreaking impact.
4. Sound Eclipse by Kristil & Shamina (Russia) is a device that reduces noise from outside when placed near an open window.
5. Kou Mikuni from Japan has made Tacomotive - a tangible driving simulator for children with visual and aural challenges.
6. Rounding off things with Poh Yun Ru’s (Singapore) platform Rewind that leverages multi-sensory stimulation to prompt meaningful recollection for seniors with dementia

All the six finalists will have the opportunity to work with industry leaders and develop prototypes of their groundbreaking ideas with a budget of  3,000,000 yen (approximately USD 25,000).

Lexus Design Award 2022 judge Anupama Kundoo said, "I was impressed by the creators' sensitivity to real-life issues faced by individuals with disabilities and the challenges facing society, such as sustainable coexistence with nature. The mentoring process will optimize the impact of the finalists' designs. I greatly enjoyed working with such a diverse jury and finding so much alignment. Where there were different perspectives, those too were complementary and aligned in their core values."
