Sharjah to add more paid parking zones by year end

In a bid to solve the lack of parking spaces for many residents and visitors to the emirate, Sharjah Municipality aims to add 5,000 new paid parking spaces by the end of the year. This ambitious goal follows its success in 2018 where it managed to convert several sandy parking lots into proper parking zones and in doing so, created 2,700 parking spaces.
Currently many motorists park their vehicles on free, unregulated spaces for long periods of time, making it difficult for others to find parking spaces. With the new paid parking structure, drivers will be discouraged from occupying parking spaces for long periods of time. Areas that the Sharjah Municipality plan to tackle include problematic areas such as Al Nahda Commercial Zone where many motorists are found misusing free parking slots.

As part of the upgrade, old parking machines will also be replaced with smart systems that can capture the number plates of parking violators. Although parking tariffs will be introduced in areas that were once free, Sharjah Municipality clarified that rates have been structured based on three categories: residents of an area, shop owners, and customers.
Motorists have the option of availing an annual subscription which costs AED 2,300 (AED 191 monthly) or can opt for the pay-as-you-go option by paying via text messages or parking machines. The monthly rates have been carefully calculated since they work out to be significantly cheaper than private parking zones that charge up to AED 400 per month.
