Hyundai Grand i10

Hyundai is the currently the world’s third largest automaker, and it manufactures almost all types of cars, globally. As of 2019, the Korean marque sells over a dozen different models in the United Arab Emirates. These include a wide variety of cars that cater to almost every segment in the market. Of course, this includes everything from small hatchbacks to large family SUVs, and even sedans and large vans. But, if all that you’re looking for is a small, no-nonsense, hassle-free mode of transportation, then the 2019 Hyundai Grand i10 should fit the bill. It’s currently the least expensive car that Hyundai offers in the UAE, and is only sold as a five-door hatchback and in the top GLS trim. The Grand i10 is built on the same architecture as that found in its Kia Picanto sibling, and was launched in foreign markets in early 2014.

Compared to its previous generation avatar, the new Hyundai Grand i10 features a more contemporary European styling for the exterior and interior, better safety gear, and improved handling. Measuring in at 3.765 meters X 1.660 meters X 1.520 meters, the new model is longer, wider, and lower than its predecessor. Its wheelbase has also been increased to 2.425 meters over the older car’s 2.380 meters. This increase in size also helped when it came to the new Grand i10’s boot, which can now hold up to 252 liters (10% more) of luggage. The Hyundai Grand i10’s design also looks more mature and appealing than before. Up front, you get large clear lens headlamps that are connected by a slender grille with Hyundai logo, while a chiseled bumper incorporates a central air intake, along with side-mounted halogen foglamps and LED daytime-running lights. The Grand i10 also wears 14-inch alloy wheels and some protective door cladding. The chic rear end gets a subtle spoiler treatment, curvy taillights, and bumper-integrated foglamps.

The dual-tone interior of the Grand i10 looks quite funky and helps lift the ambience of the cabin. You also get keyless-entry with push-button start, automatic climate control, tilt-adjustable multifunction steering wheel, a display-audio system with Bluetooth connectivity, electrically-adjustable door mirrors, and split-folding rear seats. However, the Grand i10 only comes with power windows at the front, which is a bit odd and unbecoming. As for its safety equipment, you get rear parking sensors, dual-front airbags, ABS with EBD and brake assist, and electronic stability control. The cabin itself is pretty spacious considering its exterior proportions, and offers decent room for four adults. Hyundai has added additional insulation in the Grand i10, which works well-enough at low speeds in the city. However, once you build up the pace, wind and road noise become apparent and eventually, annoying.

The Hyundai Grand i10 gets MacPherson springs at the front and a torsion beam setup at the back, like most affordable cars. The suspension tuning of the Grand i10 allows it to tackle bad pavement and bumps well at low speeds, but is also surprisingly stable at higher speeds. Of course, the low curb weight, small tires, and numb steering wheel do not exactly inspire big confidence for you to push this car’s dynamics. Under the hood, the Grand i10 is fitted with the same 1.2-liter petrol engine that powered its predecessor. This four-cylinder motor pushes out 83 ponies and 114 Nm of torque through a sluggish 4-speed automatic, and drives the front wheels. Understandably, performance isn’t this Hyundai’s strongest suit, since it takes 15.4 seconds to hit 100 km/h and top speed is just 155 km/h. But to be honest, at just 41,500 dirhams, you aren’t paying much, either.
