Quick Review

The 2012 BMW X5 has changed little from the 2011 model. Some previously optional features have now become standard. The most notable improvement is that the xDrive50i model now comes with the formerly-optional navigation system as standard.

Compared with other cars in its segment, the X5 has an eyebrow-raising price tag. It offsets this with its powerful engine, opulent styling, and high-tech gadgets. This is definitely a car for those who love power and luxury. It's a sporty SUV that will appeal to those who like some excitement while driving.

The car's interior combines elegance and premium materials. The front seats are comfortable, adjusting to a range of different positions and body types. The X5 begins to somewhat disappoint when you look at passenger seating: the rear seats have good headroom but a tad smaller leg-room, and the optional third row is really only suitable for children.

At high speeds, the 2012 BMW X5 performs very well, showing off its power and control. It handles exceptionally well under a variety of conditions. On tight roads, though, you may find the elevated ride height and heavy curb weight intrusive; plus, the X5 doesn't really offer the kind of heavy duty off-road capabilities that some competitors do. At slower speeds, the steering gets heavy; it's a good idea to add the optional active steering to offset this.
