Quick Review

Squaring up to its predecessor the Aveo, it was never hard for the Chevrolet Sonic to march ahead; and where the Aveo was all about affordability, the Sonic lets its user-friendly features do the talking.

The Sonic has much more torque (155 Nm) than its biggest rival, Ford Fiesta, and great fuel economy thanks to its lightweight build. Acceleration is easy in the Sonic, which explains its name; and it can reach a maximum speed of 189kph. It's important to note there are no real bells and whistles on the Chevrolet Sonic – you can forget about cup holders and arm rests in this machine – but this is a silver lining in terms of the car's overall weight, as well as internal space.

The hatchback model has slightly more space, but both this and four-door are reasonably spacious. The interior has been nicely put together, with plenty of storage nooks and even a second, smaller glovebox for your iPod. This is a small, economic vehicle which feels nice to use, but packs plenty of punch. Its angular headlights give it a menacing air but it's a friendly car to drive. Chevrolet is more likely marketing this at young drivers, but anyone who needs a reliable runabout at an affordable price will like this.

Essentially, if you want a set of wheels that's nice to drive but not too flashy, then the Chevrolet Sonic is making great headway against its competitors. Alternatively, you can examine similar models such as Ford Fiesta and Hyundai Accent.
