Quick Review

The Maxima is Nissan’s long running full size sedan (the clue is in the name) and is in its seventh incarnation. For 2012 the Maxima has a slightly updated exterior featuring a new grille and several other slight adjustments. The interior is broadly unchanged and there are no mechanical revisions.

The Maxima has a powerful 3.5liter V6 engine capable of 290 horsepower. The engine combined with the continuously variable transmission makes the Maxima a very sporty sedan, capable of 0 to 100 km/h in 6.4 seconds. Torque steer rears its head frequently with this car so you must be attentive when accelerating sharply; aside from this the steering is very precise and light. The suspension is also a credit to the Maxima and is very well tuned.

The Maxima’s interior is very stylish; made of quality materials and is sure to impress. There is an array of luxury features as standard. The Nissan satellite navigation is fantastic and the Bose enhanced audio system is similarly excellent. Optional features include heated steering wheel and cooled front seats.

An observation immediately obvious is that the Maxima is rather more luxurious than other Nissan models. Cars similar to the Maxima include the Chrysler 300, Hyundai Genesis and Volkswagen CC all of which are not particularly ‘luxurious’ marquees. If you are seeking performance then the CC is worth considering, however, if your primary concern is comfort then the Chrysler and Hyundai should get your attention.

This latest Maxima then is ideal if you want a stylish and sporty yet still comfortable sedan; however, those that want the very best performance; a more prestigious badge or conscious of fuel economy you should look elsewhere.
