Quick Review

The 2013 Toyota 86 is Toyota's salvo in sports coupe segment. The last time we heard Toyota and Sports together was when Supra came out. Now the 86 is making waves across the GCC markets. There are long lines of buyers eager to take this stylish car for a ride. Is it really the sports car it should be or is it all fluff?

On the drive side, it's a 2.0 liter engine that comes in both Automatic and Manual modes. The ride in both is not the kind you expect from a sports coupe, although the manual is somewhat better than the automatic. Yes, it's possible to take this car on a track and drift, as it's shown in many marketing "reviews" and blogs. Yet for all it's sportiness, we expect more performance than what we found. For 95,000 AED starting price, is it good drive for the money? Yes, it is. It's a sporty ride, with good road grip and balance. Yet, not quite a sports coupe type ride. We recommend an improvement for the next update.

On the interior side, it looks and feels like a true sports car. We loved it. Sit inside and you feel you're on a race track and the only thing missing is the pretty girl signalling "Go!". The features are minimal but the seating, style and color combinations are all very sporty. Kudos to the design team at Toyota for the aesthetics, both inside and outside.

The interior space is minimal, this is strictly a two-seater coupe so there is no room for rear passengers. The boot space is also quite limited so overall the car is not the most practical car for everyday usage. Having said that, this car is designed predominantly for single men in their early 20s who want to have fun on the road and look good while doing it. For them, this is an excellent car, at a good price tag to boot (pun unintended).

Overall the Toyota 86 has been voted by many as Coupe of the Year and we couldn't agree more. The style, the sporty ride and the value for money price tag are a winning combination for it's target audience.
