Quick Review

For years, the VW Golf has set the standard for small family hatchbacks – and 2012 is no exception.

There are a few changes in trim and available options, but the 2012 Golf is largely unchanged from last year. The interior is as impressive as ever, with excellent build quality throughout. Compared to its competitors, it’s also very spacious inside for both driver and passengers. However, boot space could be a bit lacking for those needing more cargo room.

The quality feel of the cabin is echoed by the driving experience. It feels solid and composed on the road, and compared to rival hatchbacks is much quieter at high speeds. On more demanding roads, the steering feels well weighted. It’s a fun car to drive, and feels refined as well as having enjoyable performance.

The engines on offer are economical enough, but somewhat prioritize performance over fuel economy. The 2.0 L Golf achieves 8.3 L / 100 Km, which is rivaled by competitors. Though the smaller engine option might lack a bit of power, all are well rounded engines for everyday use.

The Golf is a tad pricey within its segment, so looking at its rivals might be worthwhile. The Ford Focus can offer good refinement but with better fuel economy. Other alternatives include the Mazda 3 or Skoda Octavia, – though you’ll lack the Golf’s driving experience.

If you’re looking for a practical, desirable and fun to drive family car, then the VW Golf won’t disappoint. However, if you want a more value option, it could be worth exploring your options.
