Quick Overview

Mazda was never known to make compact lifestyle SUVs, but with the CX-5 they did a pretty good job first time round. For starters, it looks very youthful, fun, and has an athletic charm that we rarely see in this segment. The CX-5 offers the practicality of an SUV, the road manners of a sedan and plenty of versatility. Its main rivals include the Honda CRV, Toyota Rav4, Nissan X-Trail and Kia Sportage.

Looking at the 2014 Mazda CX-5, it does have very attractive qualities. Despite its size, it manages to look robust and butch while not offending anyone, one of the more stylish vehicles in its class. Sitting on an all new platform, the CX-5 has been praised as one of the most fun compact SUVs in its class. With an engaging drive and decent ride, Mazda has managed to embed its ''zoom zoom'' philosophy in the CX-5, making it a joy to drive. It is available in three trims; Sport, Touring and Grand Touring, with the latter models benefiting from bigger wheels and a slightly more premium feel. For 2014, the CX-5 comes with new engines; a 2.0 litre 4 cylinder with 155 HP or a 2.5 litre 4 cylinder with 184 HP, the latter engine seems better suited for the CX-5.

While the exterior is all about fun and enjoyment, the interior is more business-like if not slightly dull. A slightly outdated design with black plastics everywhere, it is logical and simple with materials of high quality and durability to sustain years of abuse. The cabin is spacious as well as comfortable. Standard equipment is decent for its price; standard models come equipped with keyless entry, push button start and cruise control.
