Quick Review

For 2012, the CLS has been redesigned with new styling, an improved interior, a new choice of twin turbo V8s, along with a new slightly more affordable price. Last year’s model was good, but this year’s is even better.

The overall build quality of the CLS is excellent, as you’d expect from a Mercedes. It’s surprisingly stylish both inside and out, with good interior space - though the sloping roof makes head room in the back slightly limited. However, there are only two rear seats, and the boot is only average size. It’s not the smallest in its class, but others are more practical for everyday use.

The CLS is very refined to drive, with supple suspension ensuring an excellent ride. It’s a great car for cruising on long journeys, and handles well for its size. However, the steering can lack a bit of feel, and the wing mirrors create wind noise at higher speeds.

There are some exciting engine options, and all are cheap enough to run and give good performance. The V6 is particularly a strong choice, blending efficiency and performance for everyday use. If you’re looking for power, however, the AMG models are the ones to look at.

Though the CLS is a good choice, it’s worth checking out its competitors. The BMW 5 Series is hard to beat, with a fantastic blend of economy, performance and improved interior space. The Audi A7 Sport back is another option if you’re looking for a comfortable cruiser.

If you’re looking for an all-round executive car, then the CLS is definitely worth looking at – if it suits your budget.
