Quick Review

The 2012 Mercedes-Benz SL-Class is largely unchanged from the 2011 model year. Fuel efficiency is slightly improved.

In the super-luxury sports car segment, the SL-Class is a big fish in a small pond. Of the few cars that can offer a serious challenge to this hardtop roadster, the Porsche 911 Carrera is arguably the most convincing contender. The Carrera offers superior performance and there's a hardtop model available. The Carrera isn't as luxurious inside as the SL, however. Another possibility is the Nissan GT-R, which is more powerful than the SL but has a less exciting exterior and a less plush interior. Unlike the two-seater SL-Class, the GT-R has pretensions to being a four-seater; however, the rear seats can't really accommodate adult passengers. The high-performing BMW 6-Series offers good fuel economy and a sleek exterior -- although it's less striking than the SL. The 6-Series boasts a range of enticing features (including night vision), but few come as standard. The Jaguar XK is also handsome on the outside and offers great performance, but it's not as reliable as the Mercedes and lacks the SL's luxurious interior.

The Mercedes-Benz SL-Class is a near-exotic car for the luxury shopper who is prepared to spend more to get superior performance and comfort.

The SL-Class is a comfortable ride that performs excellently over long distances. The spacious cabin is comfortable and the optional AIRSCARF feature keeps you warm even with the top down. The SL's engine gives a smooth, powerful drive.
