In a significant move, Tesla is initiating a recall affecting a huge fleet of over 2 million vehicles, spanning the entire range from the 2012 Model S to the recent 2023 models. The recall, officially lodged with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), stems from a critical flaw in Tesla's Autopilot system, accused of not adequately thwarting customer misuse.

The recall encapsulates a diverse lineup, including (2012–2023( Model S, )2016–2023( Model X, )2020–2023( Model Y, and )2017–2023( Model 3 electric vehicles, all equipped with various iterations of Tesla's Autosteer technology.

Per the NHTSA documents, the crux of the matter lies in the Autopilot system's failure to sufficiently gauge driver awareness or readiness in situations demanding intervention or system cancellation.

How is Tesla going to solve this?

An imminent over-the-air software update, set to be dispensed gratis to the affected vehicles. This update aims to fortify the system's controls, introducing additional layers of alerts and checks. These enhancements, slated to be more assertive, will be particularly vigilant when the Autosteer feature is in play outside controlled-access highways.

According to Tesla's submissions to NHTSA, a unique facet of the update is the potential suspension of the Autosteer feature for drivers exhibiting recurrent lapses in maintaining continuous and sustained driving responsibility during its engagement.

Documents from NHTSA unveil that, commencing midday on December 7, 2023, ongoing production of Model S, Model X, Model Y, and Model 3 vehicles began incorporating a software release designed to seamlessly integrate the prescribed remedy. The electric giant's decisive action underscores a commitment to ensuring the safety and integrity of its autonomous driving technology.
